Most of the whiskey labels in the US are now owned by big distillers that took control of almost every independent historic brand. This is not a bad thing necessarily, but it's nice to know that there are still small family-operated distillers left. At one time in America, immigrants from all over Britain, Ireland, and Scotland set up family stills to make use of their extra grain. The newly minted US government under George Washington was keen to collect an excise tax on whiskey, which resulted in a citizen rebellion, but eventually, the government won out, and unlicensed distilleries were outlawed, leaving just a handful of easily taxed companies to do business. The Wathen-Medley family tree goes back eight generations in Bourbon history, and today Charles Medley and his son Sam are at the helm of this 250-year-old brand. Medley Bros. Heritage Collection Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a resurrected a family brand dating back to the 1940s. Sporting the same label mow as it did 70 years ago, this 102 proof bourbon is more than 75% corn supplemented with small measures of rye and barley malt. This is a seriously good value in Straight Kentucky Bourbon. The price has remained stable for years - which is a really good thing! Flavor Profile: A younger brasher version of their 12-year-Old Medley, this Bourbon has bright alcoholic heat along with plenty of toasted barrel notes of vanilla, toffee, candied nuts, and caramel. Buttery caramel corn on the finish.
